A Clear Filter Does Not Guarantee Unrestricted Fuel Supply

A Sri Lankan tea-estate maintenance team investigated tractors that operated normally at light load but lost power during climbing and field work. The fuel filters had recently been replaced and appeared clean, so diesel injector restriction was initially suspected.

Rail or injection-pump supply data, however, showed that fuel entering the pump decreased as engine demand increased.

The repair team measured inlet vacuum and inspected the suction hoses, finding a restriction that could not be seen from the outside.

Why Suction Hoses Can Collapse Internally

A low-pressure fuel hose may retain its external shape while the inner liner separates, softens, or collapses.

Possible causes include:

  • Incorrect hose material;
  • Heat exposure;
  • Ageing;
  • Chemical incompatibility;
  • Excessive suction vacuum;
  • Tight bends;
  • Internal delamination;
  • Poor-quality replacement hose.

Under light fuel demand, the opening may remain sufficient. Under load, increased suction can pull the damaged inner wall inward and reduce flow.

Measuring Inlet Vacuum

Test Before the Filter

Vacuum was measured between the tank and filter to identify restriction in the pickup, hose, or tank vent.

Test After the Filter

A second measurement between the filter and fuel pump helped determine whether the restriction was in the filter or downstream hose.

Vacuum increased sharply under load even though the filter remained within its service condition.

Inspecting the Hose Material

The hose was removed and examined. Its inner liner had separated and partially blocked the fuel passage.

The replacement hose had previously been selected by inside diameter alone. Its material specification was not confirmed for continuous diesel exposure, temperature, suction duty, and vibration.

Checking Other Supply Components

The repair team also inspected:

  • Tank pickup;
  • Tank vent;
  • Fuel cap;
  • Hose clamps;
  • Water separator;
  • Lift pump;
  • Return circuit;
  • Air entry points.

This ensured that more than one restriction was not present.

Avoiding Incorrect Injector Diagnosis

Injector return flow and correction data did not show a clear cylinder-specific fault. Because fuel supply to all cylinders was reduced under load, replacing one injector would not have corrected the problem.

The injectors remained installed while the low-pressure circuit was repaired.

Fuel-Hose Selection Guidance

A replacement fuel hose should be confirmed for:

  • Diesel compatibility;
  • Suction or pressure duty;
  • Operating temperature;
  • Inside diameter;
  • Bend radius;
  • Reinforcement;
  • Vibration environment;
  • Connection type.

A general-purpose hose with the correct diameter may not maintain its internal shape under pump suction.

Industry Interpretation

After the correct hose was installed, inlet vacuum was measured again under the same load conditions. Fuel supply remained stable without the previous restriction.

Sri Lankan agricultural repair teams should use vacuum testing when engines lose power under load despite apparently clean filters.

Fuel delivery depends on the complete path from tank to pump. Hidden hose collapse can imitate injector, pump, or filter failure and lead to unnecessary parts replacement.
