A Bangladeshi inland-vessel workshop replaced several mechanical diesel injectors after nozzle wear was found during scheduled maintenance. After installation, the engine started, but cylinder exhaust temperatures became less consistent under steady load.
The injectors fitted correctly and did not leak externally. The workshop therefore reviewed opening pressure, spray pattern, nozzle chatter, and injector-to-injector consistency.
The situation highlights a key difference between mechanical and electronically coded injectors: mechanical injector matching depends heavily on pressure and spray behaviour.
A mechanical injector begins spraying when fuel pressure overcomes the nozzle spring force.
If opening pressure differs between cylinders, the effective start of injection may vary even when the injection pump is correctly timed.
Possible effects include:
Opening pressure must be compared with the engine’s specified range, not a general value for all marine injectors.
Each injector was tested using the same equipment, test fluid, temperature, and pressure-increase method.
Two injectors opened near one end of the permitted range, while the remaining units opened near the other end. Although individual results were not necessarily outside the broad limit, the spread across the set required review.
The workshop compared:
One injector produced a less uniform spray despite meeting the basic opening-pressure requirement.
Nozzle sealing and pressure decay were checked to identify leakage that could affect low-speed combustion.
The workshop also confirmed:
This prevented an injector adjustment from being used to hide another engine fault.
The injectors were adjusted or serviced so that opening pressure and spray behaviour followed the applicable engine requirements.
“Matched set” did not mean that every measurement was forced to an identical number. It meant that each injector remained within the specified range with controlled variation and consistent spray characteristics.
When ordering mechanical marine injectors or nozzles, buyers should confirm:
A nozzle that fits the body may still have a different spray angle or flow design.
After the injector set was rechecked, cylinder temperatures were monitored under the same engine load.
Bangladeshi inland-vessel repairers should evaluate mechanical injectors as a set, particularly after mixed repairs or partial replacement.
Opening pressure, spray consistency, pump timing, and cylinder condition provide a stronger basis for balancing combustion than installation fit alone.
