Case Type: Technical Turbo Control Case Analysis
Application: Variable-Geometry Turbocharger
Diagnostic Focus: Actuator vs Vane Mechanism
A VGT actuator can report that it reached its commanded position while the internal vane mechanism remains restricted.
The control path is:
ECU Command → Actuator → Linkage → Variable Vanes → Exhaust Flow
A position sensor may report actuator movement.
It does not necessarily measure every vane directly.
Possible causes may include:
If the actuator shaft reaches the expected position while the internal mechanism has lost motion or becomes stiff, electronic position data may appear acceptable.
The key distinction is:
actuator moved
versus
complete vane mechanism moved through the intended range.
A sticking mechanism may cause:
VGT diagnosis should verify mechanical vane freedom in addition to electrical actuator command and feedback.
