Case Type: Technical Air-Management Case Analysis
Application: EGR-Equipped Diesel Engine
Diagnostic Focus: Intake Throttle / Airflow Control
Many modern diesel engines use an intake throttle for functions other than conventional gasoline-engine load control.
Depending on design, it may assist EGR flow, shutdown smoothness or aftertreatment operation.
If the throttle remains more closed than commanded:
fresh airflow decreases → manifold conditions change → combustion behavior changes.
Possible symptoms may overlap with EGR problems.
A motor or sensor may appear to respond while deposits or mechanical wear alter actual airflow.
Relevant inspection may include:
Reduced fresh-air flow can affect smoke and combustion stability.
The resulting cylinder-correction changes can be secondary rather than injector-generated.
Air-management components should be evaluated together.
An intake-throttle fault can influence EGR and combustion behavior without an injector being mechanically defective.
