Case Type: Technical High-Pressure Fuel Case Analysis
Application: Common Rail High-Pressure Pump
Diagnostic Focus: Pumping Capacity / High-Speed Delivery
A common rail system may develop sufficient pressure for starting and idle yet fail to maintain commanded rail pressure at high engine speed.
This does not necessarily contradict the earlier successful pressure test.
Starting pressure proves that the pump can generate pressure at relatively limited fuel flow.
Higher load requires:
greater rail demand + greater delivery volume + repeated pumping events
A worn pumping element or drive interface may satisfy low-demand operation but fail at higher output.
Compare:
The pattern is more useful than one isolated number.
Before condemning the pump, verify:
A pump cannot demonstrate full capacity without adequate inlet supply.
The important distinction is:
pump can create pressure
versus
pump can sustain required pressure while delivering the required volume.
A successful cranking-pressure test confirms only one operating region.
High-pressure pump capacity should be evaluated across the demand range where the complaint occurs.
