At low speed, injection pulse width and fuel quantity per cycle are relatively small. Internal injector leakage and response differences can therefore have a greater effect on combustion stability.
The injector control valve and needle assembly must open and close within a short period. Internal wear may increase return flow and change needle response.
If one marine diesel injector produces significantly more return fuel than the other cylinders, actual fuel delivery may become insufficient or delayed.
