Low-Speed Operation Can Expose Cylinder Differences

Marine diesel engines may show speed fluctuation, uneven exhaust sound, increased vibration, or abnormal cylinder exhaust temperature during harbor operation, low-speed cruising, idle waiting, or auxiliary power duty.

At low speed, injection pulse width and fuel quantity per cycle are relatively small. Internal injector leakage and response differences can therefore have a greater effect on combustion stability.

Abnormal Return Flow Can Affect Low-Speed Injection

The injector control valve and needle assembly must open and close within a short period. Internal wear may increase return flow and change needle response.

If one marine diesel injector produces significantly more return fuel than the other cylinders, actual fuel delivery may become insufficient or delayed.

However, unusually low return flow is not always normal. A restricted return passage can also interfere with injector operation and should be investigated.

How Can Cylinder Fuel Delivery Differences Be Measured?

Engine Control Data

Electronically controlled engines may provide cylinder correction values, rail pressure, engine speed, and fault codes. An abnormal correction value can identify a suspect cylinder, but compression and valve condition may also influence the reading.

Exhaust Temperature Comparison

Under the same operating load, cylinder exhaust temperature can provide supporting information. A lower temperature may indicate reduced fuel delivery, while a higher temperature may be linked to over-fueling, injection timing, or mechanical condition.

Return Flow Comparison

An on-engine return flow test should use the same engine speed, measurement time, fuel temperature, hose length, and container size for each cylinder.

Bench Fuel Delivery Test

The injector should be tested at low pulse width, idle, and simulated cruise conditions. Fuel delivery, return flow, and response time should be evaluated together.

Marine Injector Selection Requires More Than the Brand

Before purchasing a marine engine injector replacement, buyers should verify:

  • Engine model and serial number;
  • Rated speed;
  • Power configuration;
  • Complete injector OE number;
  • Control-system version;
  • Nozzle specification;
  • Coding requirements;
  • Differences between marine and industrial applications.

Some marine engines are based on industrial platforms, but marine calibration, cooling, and load characteristics may differ.

Other Systems Can Cause Uneven Combustion

If all injector measurements are similar, technicians should inspect:

  • Fuel pressure;
  • Fuel temperature;
  • Intake restriction;
  • Turbocharger operation;
  • Cylinder compression;
  • Valve clearance;
  • Exhaust backpressure;
  • Engine mounting and driveline load.

Not every low-speed vibration or combustion imbalance should be attributed to the injectors.

Multi-Parameter Testing Supports the Repair Decision

Uneven marine diesel combustion at low speed should be assessed through return flow, fuel delivery, cylinder correction, exhaust temperature, and mechanical inspection.

Comparing data under controlled conditions can help marine service companies identify a single abnormal injector, complete-set wear, or a fault in another engine system. This provides a stronger basis for individual replacement, complete-set testing, or further engine diagnosis.
