Replacing a hydraulic filter regularly does not prove that all hydraulic oil is actually flowing through the filter media.

Many filter assemblies include a bypass valve designed to open under defined differential-pressure conditions.

If that valve remains open when it should be closed, contamination can continue circulating even with a new element installed.

Understand the Two Flow Paths

A simplified filter circuit is:

Normal condition → Oil passes through filter element

High differential pressure → Bypass valve opens → Oil avoids the element

The bypass feature is often a protective function rather than a defect.

The problem occurs when it fails to reseat correctly.

Ask Whether Oil Is Actually Being Filtered

When fine contamination continues after repeated filter changes, separate two questions:

Is the filter element defective?

and

Is some hydraulic flow bypassing the element entirely?

Replacing the element addresses only the first.

Inspect the Bypass Mechanism

Depending on filter design, inspection may include:

  • poppet movement;
  • spring condition;
  • valve seat;
  • contamination around the seat;
  • scoring;
  • housing damage;
  • differential-pressure indication.

A small amount of trapped debris may prevent complete valve closure.

Normal Hydraulic Pressure Can Be Misleading

Main system pressure primarily indicates the hydraulic system's ability to build working pressure.

It does not directly measure filtration efficiency.

The machine may therefore operate normally while fine abrasive particles continue circulating.

Temperature Changes Differential Pressure

Cold hydraulic oil is more viscous and can create higher pressure drop across the element.

Some bypass operation may therefore be expected during defined conditions.

Diagnosis should distinguish this from a valve that remains open after the oil reaches normal operating temperature.
