Diesel-powered excavators, loaders, graders and generators used on Cambodian road projects may operate through extended periods of heavy rainfall and high humidity. Under these conditions, fuel-system problems are not limited to wet external components. Water can enter bulk tanks, mobile refuelling units and equipment tanks through damaged seals, open vents, poorly protected transfer hoses or condensation.
When diesel injectors develop corrosion, sticking control components or unstable fuel delivery after replacement, attention often turns immediately to product quality. However, repeated failures across different machines may indicate that water is entering upstream of the high-pressure fuel system.
Modern common-rail injectors contain close-clearance control valves, nozzle needles and precision sealing surfaces. Water in diesel fuel can contribute to:
A clear fuel sample taken from the top of a tank may not reveal water or sediment collected at the bottom.
Contractors should collect samples from the lowest practical point of the bulk tank, mobile service tank and machine tank. Samples from filter bowls and water separators can provide additional evidence.
Each sample should be labelled with the date, location, fuel batch and equipment number. This makes it easier to determine whether contamination entered during delivery, storage, transfer or machine operation.
Fuel samples should be placed in clean, transparent containers and allowed to settle. Free water, suspended droplets, rust, sediment and biological material may separate over time.
Visual inspection does not replace laboratory analysis, but it can identify whether further investigation is required.
A water separator should be selected according to engine flow demand, connection size, filtration specification and installation position.

Installing a larger-looking separator does not guarantee suitable water-removal or fuel-flow performance.
Transfer hoses and filling nozzles should be capped when not in use. Mobile tanks require secure lids, protected breathers and planned internal cleaning.
Open funnels, unprotected hose ends and reused containers can introduce water and dirt after the main storage tank has already been checked.
During injector replacement, open high-pressure connections should also be capped immediately to prevent workshop contamination.
Before fitting a replacement diesel fuel injector, technicians should confirm the complete OE number, engine model, serial number, fuel-system version and calibration-code requirement.
The tank, filters, pump, rail and pipes should be inspected first when water-related damage is suspected. Installing a verified injector into a wet or contaminated system may expose the new unit to the same condition.
Rainy-season injector maintenance should begin with fuel storage and transfer control rather than repeated parts substitution.
Cambodian road contractors can create a more reliable diagnostic record by combining tank-bottom sampling, water-separator inspection, sealed fuel transfer and injector testing. The objective is not to claim that every wet-season problem comes from water, but to confirm whether the fuel reaching the injector is clean, dry and suitable for the precision system.
