Canadian forestry equipment often operates under high load, vibration, cold starts and long working cycles. When a HEUI-equipped machine begins to lose response after warming up, the injector may appear to be the obvious cause.
However, Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injector operation depends on more than fuel delivery. The injector uses high-pressure engine oil to control injection, meaning that oil viscosity, actuation pressure, internal leakage and control-valve response can influence performance.
A machine that operates normally when cold but becomes unstable at operating temperature should therefore be evaluated on both sides of the HEUI system.
As engine oil warms, its viscosity decreases. This is normal, but existing leakage through injector seals, high-pressure oil components or control valves may become more significant.
Possible warm-condition symptoms include:
A cold electrical resistance test or basic fuel inspection may not reproduce these conditions.
Repairers should record commanded and actual injection actuation pressure during cold and hot cranking. Low hot cranking pressure may indicate leakage that becomes more visible after the oil thins.
Battery voltage and starter speed must also be recorded because slow cranking can reduce high-pressure oil generation.
During operation, actual actuation pressure should follow the control command within the engine’s diagnostic requirements.
A pressure difference may involve the high-pressure oil pump, pressure-control valve, injector leakage, oil quality or sensor accuracy.
Oil level, viscosity grade, service history and contamination should be reviewed before removing HEUI injectors.
Incorrect oil viscosity, fuel dilution, aeration or delayed filter replacement may affect actuation response. The oil filter and pickup system should also be checked for restriction.
HEUI maintenance cannot be separated from the engine lubrication system because the actuation circuit depends on clean oil with suitable operating properties.
The injector connector, harness, solenoid resistance and control waveform should be compared in cold and warm conditions.
A winding or terminal fault may appear only after thermal expansion.
Where suitable test equipment is available, the injector should be evaluated for fuel delivery, actuation response and internal leakage under conditions relevant to the HEUI design.
A common-rail test programme should not be used as a substitute because the operating principles are different.

A similar body shape does not confirm the same oil-side response, fuel delivery or electrical specification.
Canadian forestry repairers dealing with warm HEUI symptoms should avoid diagnosing the injector from fuel-side evidence alone.
Actuation oil pressure, engine oil condition, cranking speed, high-pressure oil leakage, solenoid response and wiring behaviour all contribute to the final result.
Warm-condition data is especially important because a system that passes a cold workshop check may still fail after the engine reaches the temperature and load associated with the operator’s complaint.
