HEUI injection systems use engine oil pressure as part of injector actuation.
That creates a diagnostic architecture very different from a conventional common rail system.
Two Fluids Participate in Injection
A simplified HEUI structure is:
Fuel Supply → Injector
plus:
Engine Oil → High-Pressure Oil Pump → Control Circuit → Injector Actuation
The injector requires both sides of the system.
A Fuel Test Can Pass While the Engine Still Does Not Start
Suppose the technician confirms:
- fuel is present;
- supply pressure is adequate;
- filter is not restricted.
That proves the fuel side is available.
It does not prove sufficient injector actuation pressure exists.
Follow the High-Pressure Oil Side
Depending on system design, relevant areas can include:
- high-pressure oil pump;
- actuation pressure sensor;
- pressure regulator;
- high-pressure oil galleries;
- internal leakage;
- injector oil seals.
Cranking speed also matters because the system must generate sufficient actuation pressure during starting.
Why Replacing Fuel Injectors First Can Be Misleading
A complete set of injectors still cannot operate correctly if the high-pressure oil system cannot actuate them.
The diagnostic question should therefore be:
Does the injector have fuel?
and separately:
Does the injector have sufficient actuation energy?

HEUI diagnosis should never be reduced to fuel supply alone.
Adequate diesel delivery does not prove that the hydraulic actuation side has reached the pressure required for injection.
