Case Type: Technical Starting Electrical Case Analysis
Application: Electronically Controlled Diesel Engine
Diagnostic Focus: Cranking Voltage / ECU Supply
A battery may show a normal resting voltage yet fall significantly when the starter motor draws current.
For electronically controlled diesel engines, this can affect more than starter speed.
During cranking, voltage must support:
A battery can appear acceptable with no major load.
Once cranking begins:
high current demand → internal/external voltage drop → ECU supply voltage falls.
The engine may continue rotating but injection control can become unstable.
Useful tests may compare:
The starter may still rotate the engine at an apparently reasonable speed while electronic control voltage falls below the level needed for reliable operation.
Diesel no-start diagnosis should evaluate voltage under cranking load, not only resting battery voltage or visible starter rotation.
