Low-Speed Operation Can Expose Cylinder Differences

Harbour vessels, workboats, fishing vessels, and auxiliary marine engines operating in the UK may show increased vibration, speed fluctuation, uneven exhaust sound, or cylinder exhaust-temperature differences during low-speed cruising, manoeuvring, or idle waiting.

At low speed, injection pulse width and fuel quantity per cycle are relatively small. Differences in injector return flow and response can therefore have a greater effect on combustion stability.

Injector Return Flow Provides Information About Internal Condition

Fuel is used inside the injector for lubrication, cooling, and control-valve operation. Wear in the control valve, needle assembly, or sealing surfaces may increase return flow.

If one marine diesel injector produces significantly more return fuel than the others, the cylinder may receive insufficient fuel or the rail system may lose pressure.

However, unusually low return flow can also indicate a restricted return passage and should not automatically be treated as a normal result.

Exhaust Temperature Is a Supporting Measurement

Under the same engine speed and load, cylinder exhaust temperatures can be compared with the engine manufacturer’s technical information.

A lower temperature may be linked to insufficient fuel delivery, low compression, or incomplete combustion. A higher temperature may be associated with excessive fuel delivery, injection timing, exhaust restriction, or mechanical condition.

Exhaust temperature alone does not prove injector failure, but it can help identify the cylinder requiring further inspection.

Field Test Conditions Must Remain Consistent

When comparing return flow, technicians should maintain the same:

  • Engine speed;
  • Operating load;
  • Fuel temperature;
  • Measurement period;
  • Return hose length;
  • Container size.

Hoses should also be checked for restriction, bending, leakage, or incorrect routing.

Bench Testing Should Include Low-Speed Conditions

A suspect injector should be tested on compatible equipment for:

  • Starting injection quantity;
  • Idle fuel delivery;
  • Low-pulse-width response;
  • Return flow;
  • Sealing;
  • Spray pattern;
  • Medium-load fuel delivery.

Testing only at a high-load point may fail to identify a low-speed response problem.

Marine Injector Selection Requirements

Before ordering a marine engine injector replacement, buyers should verify the engine model, serial number, rated speed, power configuration, fuel-system type, complete OE number, and coding requirements.

Some marine engines are based on industrial engine platforms, but marine calibration and operating characteristics may differ. External similarity is not sufficient evidence of compatibility.

Multi-Parameter Comparison Supports Diagnosis

Uneven combustion at low speed should be investigated through injector return flow, fuel delivery, exhaust temperature, cylinder correction, compression, and valve condition.

By comparing these measurements under controlled operating conditions, UK marine service companies can identify abnormal cylinders more accurately and determine whether individual injector testing or broader engine inspection is required.
