When a diesel engine repeatedly runs normally with a full tank but begins to stall as the fuel level drops, fuel level itself becomes a diagnostic variable.
This pattern can help distinguish a high-pressure injection fault from an upstream tank-pickup problem.
The Pickup Tube Changes Its Environment as Fuel Level Falls
A fuel pickup usually extends toward the lower area of the tank.
If the pickup tube develops a crack or damaged joint above its normal inlet:
Fuel above crack → damaged section remains submerged
but later:
Fuel below crack → damaged section exposed to air
The supply pump may then begin drawing air together with fuel.
Why Refueling Can Seem to “Repair” the Engine
Adding fuel raises the liquid level.
If the damaged section becomes submerged again, air entry may temporarily stop.
The vehicle may then behave normally until the fuel level falls below the same point again.
