Original Injector Catalogues Become Unreliable After Fuel-Pump Conversions on Older Industrial Engines, Leading Bosnian Repairers to Recheck Pump Numbers, Opening Pressure and Nozzle Specifications

Fuel-Pump Conversion Changes the Injector Matching Process

Older industrial engines may remain in service after their original injection pumps become difficult to repair or replace. In some Bosnian workshops, an available inline or rotary pump may be adapted to an engine that originally used another specification.

After this conversion, the original engine injector catalogue may no longer provide a complete selection answer. The injector body may still fit the cylinder head, but opening pressure, nozzle flow and spray design must match the converted fuel-delivery system.

Why Pump and Injector Specifications Must Work Together

A mechanical injection system depends on the relationship between:

  • Injection-pump delivery;
  • Pump cam profile;
  • Injection timing;
  • High-pressure pipe characteristics;
  • Injector opening pressure;
  • Nozzle-hole design;
  • Engine combustion chamber.

Changing the pump can alter pressure rise, delivery duration and available fuel quantity.

An injector selected only by the original engine model may not respond correctly to the converted pump.

Identify the Installed Pump

Pump Nameplate Data

Repairers should record the pump manufacturer, complete model number, governor type and any calibration references.

Pump Delivery Information

Where available, the conversion record should include delivery quantity, rated speed, cylinder order and timing specification.

A general statement that the pump “fits the engine” is not sufficient for injector matching.

Verify Injector Opening Pressure

The opening pressure determines when the nozzle needle begins to lift under pump pressure.

A value that is too high for the converted system may delay or reduce injection. A value that is too low may alter timing, spray behaviour or nozzle sealing.

Every injector in the set should be tested using the same equipment, fluid temperature and pressure-increase method.

Check the Nozzle Specification

Important nozzle details include:

  • Nozzle reference;
  • Number of spray holes;
  • Hole diameter;
  • Spray angle;
  • Tip length;
  • Sac design;
  • Installation dimensions.

A nozzle that screws into the injector holder may still direct fuel incorrectly for the combustion chamber.

Review Timing and High-Pressure Pipes

The injection-pump timing should be confirmed after conversion. High-pressure pipes must follow the correct cylinder sequence and should not be shortened or reshaped without technical justification.

Pipe length and internal volume can influence pressure-wave behaviour in mechanical systems.

Replacement Injector Guidance

When purchasing injectors for a converted engine, the enquiry should include:

  • Original engine model;
  • Installed pump number;
  • Pump calibration information;
  • Existing injector body number;
  • Nozzle reference;
  • Required opening pressure;
  • Photographs and dimensions;
  • Operating speed and application.

The supplier should know that the engine no longer uses its original fuel-system configuration.

Industry Interpretation

Fuel-pump conversions require a new technical baseline rather than automatic use of the original catalogue.

Bosnian repairers can reduce mismatching by treating the installed pump, injector opening pressure, nozzle design, timing and combustion chamber as one system.

A mechanically compatible injector is only a starting point. The final selection must also support the pressure, timing and spray characteristics created by the converted injection pump.
