Incoming Inspection Should Begin Before Cleaning

Product Identity

The distributor should record the injector OE number, supplier number, batch, serial reference and calibration code before the unit is cleaned.

Photographs should show the nozzle, connector, high-pressure inlet, return port, threads and external damage.

Application Information

The customer should provide the engine model, serial number, equipment type, installation date and operating symptoms.

A returned injector cannot be evaluated accurately when its application is unknown.

Fuel-Contamination Checks

Filters, fuel samples and pump debris can provide evidence of upstream contamination.

The distributor may request:

  • Tank sample;
  • Filter photographs;
  • Water-separator condition;
  • High-pressure pump findings;
  • Rail and pipe inspection results;
  • Information about recent refuelling.

Water, rust or metal debris should not automatically be blamed on the injector supplier.

Core Grading Separates Damage Types

Serviceable Core

The injector remains complete, identifiable and suitable for controlled disassembly and testing.

Damaged Core

The body, connector, threads or nozzle area shows impact, fire, corrosion or unauthorised modification.

Incomplete Core

Important components or identification markings are missing.

Core grading helps distinguish a hydraulic performance complaint from physical damage that occurred during removal, transport or previous repair.

Bench Testing Should Match the Application

Depending on injector design, the programme may include:

  • Starting delivery;
  • Idle quantity;
  • Medium- and high-load delivery;
  • Return flow;
  • Nozzle sealing;
  • Electrical response;
  • Opening pressure for mechanical injectors.

The report should state pressure, pulse width, test-fluid temperature, cycle count and permitted range where applicable.

A normal bench result may indicate that the original problem involved wiring, fuel supply, compression or installation.

Creating a Root-Cause Classification

Returned units can be grouped as:

  • Confirmed injector performance issue;
  • Fuel contamination;
  • Incorrect OE application;
  • Installation or sealing issue;
  • Electrical harness problem;
  • External transport damage;
  • No fault found under the stated conditions;
  • Insufficient evidence.

This classification is more useful than recording every return as a supplier failure.

Industry Interpretation

Mixed fleets require a structured receiving and evaluation process because different applications create different risk patterns.

Zambian distributors can make more defensible warranty and purchasing decisions by connecting application data, contamination evidence, core condition and model-specific test results.

The purpose is not to reject legitimate claims. It is to identify whether the returned injector, the surrounding fuel system or the original selection process provides the strongest evidence for the reported problem.
