A driver may report that a diesel engine “will not make power” and assume the fuel system cannot deliver enough fuel.
Modern emissions systems create another possibility:
the ECU may intentionally limit torque.
Mechanical Capability and Allowed Torque Are Different
The engine may have:
- correct rail pressure;
- adequate boost;
- normal injector behavior;
while the ECU restricts commanded torque because of an aftertreatment fault.
This is not the same as a mechanical inability to produce power.
SCR-Related Control Can Affect Driver Experience
Depending on system and regulations, aftertreatment faults may trigger staged warnings or torque limitations.

The issue exists at a higher control layer.
Therefore:
low vehicle power
does not always mean
low fuel-system capability.
